The cost of living is way higher in northern California than in North Carolina, so you might want to get used to that. If you previously lived in a nice 3000 sq. ft. house, you should expect no more than a ghetto shack in San Francisco for the same price. However, if you lived in an apartment, what you get for $1000/mo in northern California is what you get for $300/mo in North Carolina. You can easily look up air travel prices by using sites such as expedia or orbitz – a good deal should be around $200/passenger. Apartment deposits can greatly vary, but they are usually about half the monthly rental cost. It is highly recommended that you use the BART to travel through the city. When that doesn't work, walking can often do the job. Traffic can get really bad, and parking is hard to find.
