See if there is a local chamber of commerce. They sometimes sponsor a "welcome wagon". This is mostly information about community, schools, clubs, etc.

Hire a competent moving company. I just moved long distance and saved about $400 on the moving company. HOWEVER , they broke a box of glass antiques and did several hundred dollars damage to my plasma tv. I will now spend hundreds of hours finding the antiques IF they are to be found. Had to rent a truck to take tv to repair shop and of course wait several days more to get it. Their attitude was "just make a claim". Will supply you with the name of the movers to stay away from.

The worst thing is being affraid of change which is normal. Just go do what you need to and it will all be good. No matter what you are doing the first step is allways the hardest.

Purge everything that hasn't been touched or used in the past year BEFORE you pack to move. (This doesn't include heirlooms, etc.) Most people find that they just have too much stuff, and are surprised to find how big of a pile they end up with. What you do with it after that is up to you. It could mean having a yard sale, making a trip to Goodwill or even just a trip to the garbage dump.

Once in the new city, in addition to finding your new grocery and other name stores that you'll need right away, make time to take an evening walk and check out your new neighborhood, and especially now that it's summer. The people you run into walking dogs, etc. are likely to be friendly enough and a fountain of all the saavy information to make getting into your new life much easier.

Generally, when you have a question, don't be afraid to ask anybody you encounter, from the grocery check out person to you new co-workers.

Most of all, don't give up when you need to find information. Making phone calls can get you what you need to a certain extent, but the person on the other end may not have time to hand-hold for questions other than the direct information they hold.

Look at the whole thing as an adventure! It can be great fun!
