Anyone have any tips on moving into a smaller apartment?
Cheeto asked:
I have to get rid of some things and I don't even know where to start. My apartment now is a one bedroom with a basement. My new apartment in a different city won't have a basement. So I need to start getting rid of my things. I have a book collection, Christmas tree and decorations, etc. I don't even know where to start. I'll be loosing almost 400 square feet!!

If you are a young person with parents sitill living, take heart. Mom and dad will gladly make room for all your extra equipment that is needed to survive this cruel world. Just decide which pieces of equipment you will need on a daily basis and box the rest up and send it to mom and dad. There is an up-side to this madness; your mom and dad will look forward to your frequent visits to exchange your old stuff with your new stuff and possibly have a chance to get acquainted with the daughter they thought they had lost.

When moving it is weird the stuff we think we can or can't live without. Have you considered making better use of your new space with shelves, bankers boxes and other storage methods which will allow you to keep more in a more organized manner? Start looking at stuff. If you have used it within the last 6 months bring it with. If you can't buy a new used one on Craigslist any day of the week and you like it, keep it. Anything you are keeping around which has little monetary value, is common and replaceable and you have not used in ages, just get rid of it. Pick a cause you love and make a nice donation to their thrift store or if you are more lazy than altruistic, put a free ad on Craigslist to get the stuff to go to a good home.
When you move, take all the stuff you love first, then take the stuff you need and then sort carefully through the stuff which is left. If you like doing a Christmas tree, bring the Christmas stuff, you will be sad without it. If you only do Christmas out of obligation maybe you can look into getting a smaller tree for your smaller place and enjoy buying new smaller ornaments.
